Shadow grade policy

The purpose of not recording grades in the first semester is to give students from diverse backgrounds a chance to adapt to a shared academic culture and to learn without being distracted by the pressure to perform well for the record. This intention is compromised if shadow grades are used for other purposes.

In semester one (our ungraded semester), instructors submit shadow grades to the course facilitator who in turn submits them to Registry. Registry is authorized to share the grades of selected students with the appropriate Vice Rectors to identify students at risk. Shadow grades can be used only for this purpose. They should not be shared with faculty, used in writing reference letters, or for any other purpose.
